Job Description

The Department of Sociology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham invites applications for a non-tenure track teaching assistant professor to start in Fall 2021. We seek a candidate to fulfill instructional needs in the undergraduate program, as well as meet increasing enrollment demands in the online MA program in Applied Sociology, and develop an undergraduate sociology internship program.

The ideal candidate will be excited by the possibilities of online learning, enjoy working directly with students both online and in person, a generalist capable of teaching a variety of courses, and be dedicated to achieving the highest standards of excellence in their work. Candidates should have a PhD in Sociology or related field, experience teaching both online and in the classroom, and outstanding evaluations of their work as an instructor. The expected teaching load is a four/three for the academic year and supervision of the internship program.

The department offers a BA and MA in Sociology and a BS and PhD in Medical Sociology. Research in the department focuses on medical sociology and health-related topics. Currently, the department has about 100 undergraduate majors, 85 online MA students, 25 students in its PhD in Medical Sociology program, and 11 full-time faculty. Required Qualifications

The candidate must hold a Ph.D. in Sociology or a related field at the time of appointment. Must have experience teaching both in the classroom and online with excellent evaluations of their work as an instructor. Must present demonstrated commitment to excellence in their work.

Preferred Qualifications

The candidate should be a generalist capable of teaching a variety of courses to meet departmental needs, have an interest in applied sociology, and genuinely enjoy working with students both online and in person. Previous work with experiential learning programs is a plus.
